Australia could be without its two biggest stars at this year’s Motocross of Nations. Hunter Lawrence revealed on Monday night during Steve Matthes’ PulpMX Show that both he and his brother Jett are seriously considering skipping the 2026 edition of the event, which will take place on October 3-4 in Ernée, France.
The news would be a major blow to Australia’s title defense, as the team arrives at this year’s event as the reigning champion after winning the last two editions of the prestigious international competition.
During the interview, Hunter explained that the decision is not related to injuries or performance concerns, but rather to the need to give the entire team a well-deserved break after several years of virtually non-stop racing.
«We’ve decided to take it easy this year, mainly for the benefit of the team. It’s been six or seven years where our off-seasons have been two weeks long at best. We feel like our team needs it, and honestly, we need it too.»
The Honda rider explained that the plan would affect all international events following the American season, including several races that have traditionally been part of the Lawrence brothers’ schedule.
«It’s not forever, it’s just for this year. There will be no Paris Supercross, no AUSX Open. We’re simply not doing overseas events. We’ll be back at it next year.»
Hunter also emphasized the sacrifices made by the crew members who support the team throughout the season.
«Our guys are away from home 31 weekends a year. They have families and kids. Then there are the weeks they spend in Florida testing, which aren’t even part of the race season. They’re away from their families then too. We feel like we owe it to them to say, ‘You know what? Let’s give everyone a bit of a break.'»
The Australian concluded by expressing his hope that the entire team can enjoy some time away from racing in October.
«Hopefully everyone can take October off. That would be awesome.»
At this stage, there has been no official confirmation that the Lawrence brothers will miss Ernée. However, Hunter’s comments make it clear that their participation is very much in doubt. Should they ultimately sit out the event, Australia would need to completely rethink its lineup as it attempts to defend the Chamberlain Trophy.
