Austin Forkner has officially announced his retirement from professional motocross and supercross competition, bringing to an end a career that was defined by immense talent, remarkable speed, and an unfortunate series of injuries.

From his amateur days, Forkner was regarded as one of the brightest prospects in American motocross. His transition to the professional ranks only reinforced those expectations, as he quickly established himself as a regular race winner and title contender in the 250 class.

However, injuries became a recurring theme throughout his career. Several promising championship campaigns were interrupted by serious crashes and lengthy recovery periods. Among the most notable setbacks were a torn ACL in 2019, injuries sustained during the 2020 title fight, and multiple crashes that forced him to miss significant portions of subsequent seasons.

Despite those challenges, Forkner consistently fought his way back to the front. His determination earned him 13 AMA Supercross 250SX victories and one AMA Pro Motocross overall win, making him one of the most successful riders of his generation who never captured a major championship.

A turning point came in 2024 following a severe crash in Dallas. During medical examinations related to the accident, doctors discovered an arteriovenous malformation (AVM), a potentially dangerous abnormal connection between arteries and veins in the brain. Forkner later underwent brain surgery to have the condition removed.

After continuing to battle injuries and physical limitations during his final seasons with Triumph Factory Racing, the American rider ultimately decided it was time to step away from professional competition.

While his statistics speak for themselves, Forkner’s legacy extends beyond race wins. He leaves the sport as one of the most naturally gifted riders of his era and a lasting reminder of how unpredictable a racing career can be.

For many fans, Austin Forkner’s retirement will always be accompanied by one lingering question: what might have been if injuries had not stood in his way?
