The penultimate round of the Dutch Motocross Masters took place this Sunday, May 17, in Markelo, in an event that once again brought together several MXGP World Championship stars before the world championship resumes on May 23 and 24 with the French Grand Prix in Lacapelle-Marival.
And speaking of comebacks, Kay de Wolf, who was unable to compete in the previous round after suffering a thumb injury that required surgery, made a spectacular return by taking the overall win in the 500cc class. The Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing rider finished second in the first race behind Jeffrey Herlings, who led from the start.
The second race, however, had a different story. Herlings led for most of the race, but it was near the end when De Wolf saved a final attack, which he executed successfully to win the race and the overall title for the day with the same points as Herlings, who finished second with a 1-2 result. The podium was rounded out by Romain Febvre after finishing 4-3.
With one round remaining, Herlings retains the red plate with a 24-point lead over Febvre.
250cc: Liam Everts Wins & Cas Valk Injured
Liam Everts dominated both races, leaving his rivals in the dust, on a day marked by Cas Valk’s injury. The Dutch rider arrived in Markelo as the championship leader, but his title hopes were dashed during qualifying, where he suffered a hard crash that resulted in a fractured femur. Naturally, this also jeopardizes the rest of his season.
Janis Reisulis finished second overall with a 3-2 in the races, while his brother Karlis Reisulis rounded out the podium with a 2-4. The two brothers will battle for the title at the final round, where they will arrive separated by just 2 points, an advantage currently held by Janis.
