Weekend to Forget: Kay de Wolf Loses Ground at Matterley Basin
Reigning MX2 World Champion Kay de Wolf endured one of his toughest weekends of the season at round twelve of the 2025 FIM Motocross World Championship in Matterley Basin. A string of crashes and underwhelming results cost him valuable points in the title race, allowing current leader Simon Langenfelder to extend his advantage with an overall GP win.
The Nestaan Husqvarna rider’s troubles began on Saturday with a violent crash over the finish line jump at the end of the timed qualifying session. Although he escaped uninjured, things didn’t improve in the qualifying race, where multiple mistakes and crashes left him down in 18th, outside of the points and with a poor gate pick for Sunday’s motos.
In the main races, de Wolf was forced to fight back from mid-pack starts. In the first moto, he climbed from tenth to sixth before a late error saw him drop behind teammate Liam Everts. In the second moto, he reached eighth on lap four and held position to the finish. His 7-8 results placed him tenth overall for the Grand Prix.

The Dutchman now drops to third in the championship standings, 70 points behind Langenfelder, with eight GPs still remaining.
With a two-week break before the next round, de Wolf hopes to reset and return to form on terrain that suits him best: sand. The series resumes on July 13 in Finland, where Kay has enjoyed success in the past.
“It was definitely one of those tougher weekends. Crashing in practice and then again in qualifying meant I was on the back foot right from the start, but I gave it everything in both motos. I wasn’t able to fight right at the front, but we still took points, and limited the damage. Now it’s about resetting, using the break to come back stronger, and closing that gap to the top. There’s still a lot of racing left, and I’m fully focused on turning things around in Finland.”
