Guillem Farrés left Türkiye with a commanding advantage in the MX2 championship battle. The Triumph Factory Racing rider claimed his sixth overall victory of the season with a 2-1 scorecard and took full advantage of Sacha Coenen’s double DNF to move another step closer to his first world title with two rounds to go.
The MXGP crown has already been decided, with Jeffrey Herlings securing the championship in the opening moto. In MX2, however, the fight remains mathematically open, although the momentum is increasingly shifting towards Farrés.
Sacha Coenen suffers double DNF
It was a nightmare day for Sacha Coenen (Red Bull KTM De Carli). The Belgian suffered a heavy crash in the opening moto after hitting the starting gate and was forced to retire while trying to recover positions.
Coenen returned for the second moto and even took the holeshot, leading the opening lap. But after Farrés moved past him, the Belgian eventually entered the pit lane and retired from the race.
The double zero represents a major blow to his championship hopes. With Coenen failing to score, Camden McLellan, Farrés’ Triumph teammate, moves into second in the championship standings, now 50 points behind Farrés with 120 still available.
Farrés, meanwhile, needs to score just 10 more points to mathematically secure the MX2 World Championship at the next round in China.
The reigning world champion Simon Langenfelder finished second overall after winning the opening moto and taking third in the second. A poor start in the final race forced the German into another comeback ride, but he eventually fought his way forward to third.
Liam Everts (Nestaan Husqvarna) completed the overall podium with a consistent 4-2 scorecard. McLellan narrowly missed out on the podium, finishing fourth overall after going 3-4 across the two motos.
With China next on the calendar, Farrés now has his first real opportunity to put the MX2 title beyond doubt. After another victory and Coenen’s disastrous weekend in Türkiye, the championship is firmly moving in the Spaniard’s direction.
