Check out everything you need to know about the 79th edition of the 2026 Motocross of Nations, which will take place on the weekend of October 3–4 in Ernée, France. Below is a detailed guide with the key facts to keep in mind as you follow the biggest motocross race of the year.
How does the Motocross of Nations work?
The format of the Motocross of Nations differs from that of any World Championship Grand Prix. Each country fields three riders—one in MXGP, one in MX2, and one in OPEN—who will compete as a team for the Chamberlain Trophy.
Scoring for the event is based on finishing positions: first place receives one point, second place two points, and so on. On Saturday, each category has a separate heat to determine who advances to the final heats. From there, only two of the three results are counted, with the worst result discarded. The same applies on Sunday.
Each category will have three heats in which riders compete against each other, and five of the six results will be counted, eliminating the worst result to achieve the lowest possible score.
Friday: The Ballot for Gate-pick positions
The official event begins with the traditional ballot for gate positions, a key moment of the weekend. Each nation is assigned a number that will determine the order in which it can choose its grid position during the qualifying races. This is purely a matter of luck.
Saturday: Free Practice and Qualifying Races
Saturday’s schedule begins with free practice sessions for each class. Regardless of the results, the starting gate selection for the qualifying heats will be based on Friday’s preliminary ballot.
This will be followed by the qualifying heats in the following order:
- MXGP
- MX2
- OPEN
The qualifying order will also be used to determine the starting gates. The remaining nations that did not qualify directly will have a second chance in the “B Final” on Sunday morning. There, the three riders from each country will compete, and the worst result will be eliminated to determine the final spot in the final.
Sunday: Race Day
Each rider competes in two heats, so each team accumulates a total of six results.
At the end of the third race, the five best results out of the six individual performances are tallied. The nation with the fewest points after that cut is crowned champion of the Motocross of Nations.

- RACE 2: MX2 + OPEN
- RACE 3: MXGP + OPEN
