WMX France: Daniela Guillen takes the opening Grand Prix

Daniela Guillén claimed victory at the opening round of the 2026 Women’s Motocross World Championship in Lacapelle-Marival after a strong comeback ride in race two. The Spanish rider secured the overall win with a 2-1 scorecard, earning the fifth Grand Prix victory of her WMX career.

Six-time world champion Kiara Fontanesi struck first by winning Saturday’s opening moto — her first race win to start a WMX season since 2013 — but Guillén responded on Sunday. After starting outside the top five, the Spaniard quickly charged forward, caught Fontanesi by lap five and took control of the race to secure both the moto and overall victory.

Fontanesi finished second overall with a 1-2 result, tied on points with Guillén, while France’s April Franzoni completed the podium to celebrate the first overall podium finish of her WMX career.

Defending world champion Lotte van Drunen endured a difficult start to her title defense. A crash in the opening moto forced the Dutch rider to recover from last place to ninth, before salvaging third in race two on Sunday. Despite the rebound, Van Drunen leaves the opening round fourth overall, already trailing Guillén and Fontanesi by 15 points in the championship standings.
