The WMX Women’s Motocross World Championship is holding its first round of the season at the French Grand Prix, at the Lacapelle-Marival circuit.
Kiara Fontanesi took the win in the first race of the WMX Women’s World Championship at Lacapelle-Marival, while Daniela Guillén kicked off the season with a solid second-place finish. Meanwhile, defending champion Lotte van Drunen managed to salvage a ninth-place finish after crashing in the opening laps.
The six-time world champion struck first by winning the first race of the year, a start the Italian hadn’t achieved since 2013. Fontanesi led every lap, though in the early stages she did so under constant pressure from Guillén, who ultimately crossed the finish line in second place.
Further back, April Franzoni secured the first top-three finish of her career in World Championship races by finishing third, benefiting from the crashes of Van Drunen and Courtney Duncan in the opening laps.
Van Drunen, the reigning world champion, had to fight her way back from last place to ninth to secure crucial points in such a short championship.
