The WMX World Championship returned to action this weekend at the historic British track for the third round of the WMX calendar. Race 2 will take place tomorrow.
The victory in Race 1 went to Kiara Fontanesi, who dominated the race from start to finish. The Italian took the holeshot and led every lap, though in the final laps she saw Courtney Duncan gradually close the gap after staging a solid comeback. The New Zealander ultimately finished in second place, though she never truly threatened Fontanesi’s victory.
For her part, Daniela Guillén put in a consistent performance to secure the third spot on the podium. The Spanish rider made several passes in the early laps that allowed her to hold second place for much of the race. However, in the final stretch, she was unable to hold off Duncan’s advance and ended up crossing the finish line in third place.
Looking ahead to Sunday’s race, Guillén retains the championship lead, though her advantage over Fontanesi has been reduced to just one point, setting the stage for an intense battle for the Grand Prix title.
