This weekend, the iconic Maggiora MX Park in Italy will host the 10th round of the FIM Motocross World Championship, marking the halfway point of the 2024 season. This event, the third in a series of three consecutive race weekends, will be featured by some of the top EMX250 riders as they will stepping up in the MX2 class as a wildcards entries.
The whole VRT Yamaha Official team in the EMX250 class, will debut in MX2 with Ivano van Erp, Karlis Reisulis, and Gavin Towers.
Van Erp sits 4th in the standings with one podium (3rd at the opening round in Spain). This will be his second MX2 appearance since Lommel 2023. After some DNFs due to mechanical issues, Karlis Reisulis earned his first podium of the season finishing 2nd in front of his home crowd in Kegums, a perfect boost of confidence at the right time before his MX2 debut. With just two races under his belt, American Gavin Towers did an impressive performance, enough to test himself against the MX2 field. It is also rumored that Towers will be racing at the double-header Grand Prix in Indonesia.
Speaking of the leader, Mathis Valin from Bud Racing Kawasaki is the red-plate holder of the EMX250 class, but he has no plans yet to make an MX2 wildcard appearance…On the other hand, Beddini GasGas´ Valerio Lata is ready to face another Grand Prix. Lata sits third in the standings and is ready with more Moto wins so far. His teammate Mads Fredsoe will be sidelined due to injury.
Cas Valk is set to make another MX2 appearance, third this year after an 18th in Sardegna and an 11th in Galicia. The Gabriel SS24 KTM rider took the overall win last weekend in Kegums and now sits second in the standings just 13 points behind the leader.
