WMX Foxhills: Fontanesi Wins and Takes the Red Plate

Fontanesi WMX Foxhills 26

The WMX World Championship returned to action this weekend at the historic British venue, where Kiara Fontanesi secured her first overall victory of the season and, with it, took over the championship lead by just two points ahead of Guillén.

Both motos followed a remarkably similar pattern throughout the weekend. In Saturday’s opening race, Fontanesi led from start to finish, although her position came under pressure in the closing stages from Courtney Duncan. Sunday’s second moto saw the Italian once again grab the holeshot and lead every lap on her way to the checkered flag.

Daniela Guillén (RFME Mequitec GasGas) delivered another consistent performance to secure the runner-up spot on the overall podium. The Spanish rider charged forward in the opening laps of both motos, finishing 3-2 for the weekend. In both races, she set the fastest lap times while working her way through the field, underlining her speed despite missing out on the race wins.

Courtney Duncan (Dixon Kawasaki) completed the overall podium with 2-3 finishes. It marks the New Zealander’s first WMX podium since the Turkish Grand Prix in 2024.

As a result, Fontanesi records her first perfect 1-1 overall since Turkey 2021 and earns her first red plate since Ernée 2017 after moving ahead of Guillén by just two points in the standings.

At this stage, the title fight appears set to become a head-to-head battle between Fontanesi and Guillén. Duncan remains third in the championship but trails by 41 points with only two rounds remaining. The fourth and penultimate round of the season will take place in Arnhem, the Netherlands, on August 22-23.
