SuperMotocross Playoff 1 Preview: Schedule, Points & Breaking News

smx playoff 1 preview

The 2025 SuperMotocross Playoffs kick off this Saturday, September 6, at the zMAX Dragway in Concord, North Carolina. The series consists of three rounds on unique hybrid tracks that combine the obstacles of Supercross with the high-speed challenges of motocross. At stake: a $1,000,000 prize for the 450SMX Champion and $500,000 for the 250SMX Champion.

Here’s everything you need to know before the first gate drop.

Breaking News: Prado & Plessinger OUT

Just two days before the Playoffs begin, Kawasaki has confirmed that Jorge Prado will not compete in any of the three SMX rounds. Despite qualifying 13th in the 450SMX seeding, the Spaniard will not line up. His absence fuels rumors about an imminent split with Kawasaki, and it’s possible Budds Creek was his last race in green.

Plessinger sat out the final four rounds of the Pro Motocross season while aiming to recover in time for SMX Playoff 1, but the decision has now been made to focus on 2026.

Friday First Practice & Full Schedule

The action begins today with free practice. Riders will hit the track at 1:00 p.m. local time, with the SMX Next All-Star class opening the program. Stay tuned for first impressions and times.

Seeding for the SMX Playoffs was based on combined points from the AMA Supercross and Pro Motocross championships.

450SMX: Justin Cooper (Yamaha) will carry the red plate for the first time in his 450 career after scoring the most combined points. He was also one of only two riders—along with Malcolm Stewart—to complete every single round of both SX and MX. Pro Motocross Champion Jett Lawrence sits second, with Stewart third and AMA Supercross Champion Cooper Webb fourth.

250SMX: Haiden Deegan (Star Racing Yamaha) enters as the red plate holder after winning the 250SX West Coast and 250MX Pro Motocross titles.

Race Format:

  • Two motos per class with Olympic scoring (1st = 1 point, 2nd = 2 points, etc.).
  • The rider with the lowest score is the event winner.
  • Overall Standings before Playoff 1: 1st gets 25 points, 2nd gets 22, 3rd gets 20, etc.
